A favourite pastime of Australian kids is backyard cricket. Cricket is a sport played with a bat and ball. It is many hundreds of years old. It began in England. Baseball is a modified version of cricket, but the two games do not look so similar today. In cricket, the batter must protect his (or her) stumps (three upright sticks) from being hit by the bowler. The stumps can be thought of as the base in baseball.
In these photos we see Chiaki, Kohta, Tatsuya and their cousins Sebastian and Kiri enjoying a game of backyard cricket. While the game was taking place, some wild birds called scrub turkeys were happily scratching around in the leaf litter at the bottom of the garden.

レイシーパパさん、今日は。
遅くなりましたが、明けましておめでとうございます。
年末年始の里帰りは、ご家族でゆっくりと満喫できましたでしょうか。
クリケットできる庭って素敵ですね。日本では（特に都会では・・・）難しいです。私たちの外遊びの場所は、どうしても学校のグラウンドや公園や近所の空き地（これも本当は遊んではいけないのですが・・・。）やスポーツセンター等に限られてしまいます。
土地の広さもあるかもしれませんが、自然と住居と生活施設等のスペースのバランスを保てている海外の町並みは、やはりいいことだと思います。
スクラブターキー・・・なんだか面白い雰囲気を持った鳥ですね。でも、日本の雀みたいに、近づいたらタッタカタ～♪って、逃げちゃいそうですね。
また機会がありましたら、是非、エピソードを紹介してください。

I'm not familiar with cricket nor do I watch cricket matches on television, not even the heated matches between India and Pakistan.
But it seems you had fun playing that. I'm not familiar with sports enjoyed by countries under the British Crown, like the ones played in the Commonwealth Games.
I find Australian variations of some sports like footy, or Aussie rules, quite interesting. Occasionally, I watch AFL matches on the Australia Network on Sundays and sometimes find it more thrilling than soccer.

Thank you so much Mr. Lacey for that brief information about cricket. ^-^
Now I know what it really is. I've also seen kids in the Middle East, particularly Dubai, enjoying a game of cricket in a vacant lot and they really are visibly having fun playing.
And is that really a turkey? I thought it was just a large species of cuckoo!
Right now I'm enjoying a very short Aussie trip, from an old friend's house in Hampden Road, Artarmon (did I just say ARTARMON?) yesterday and tonight we've just arrived in Cootamundra to have some taste of rural Australia before proceeding to Wollongong and back to Sydney. So much to do in a short time frame as I'll go back to Manila on Friday. I insisted on going to Kotara, but, oh well... I guess I'll just see you guys in JPN!
